Psalms 37:4 – November 28, 2018

Find your delight in the LORD who will give you your heart’s desire. Psalms 37:4 NABRE

Psalm 37 deals with a seeming contradiction of the wicked doing well, prospering even and yet the upright are asked to trust in the LORD. The psalm begins with advice to disciples, exhorting them to be patient and trust in God, even when evildoers prosper and are successful. Then comes a description of how the wicked and the just lead their lives, and how the LORD deals with each group, the wicked will perish and the children of the LORD will become a blessing. Those listening to the psalm are challenged and given reasons why they should heed the Lord’s advice, they are encouraged to do good, hope in the Lord and to follow the example of the blameless. It is a psalm that is much like the voice of Jesus promising to give the earth and eternal life to the meek, (Mathew 5:5) to those who trust in God and are not influenced by the behavior of the wicked. Those who trust in God and keep His commandments will receive a share of salvation, while those who act violently and unjustly to make themselves rich in earthly goods will receive no such reward. Those who find delight in the LORD will be given their heart’s desire.

This can be a question we have in life, if we follow the LORD and all that is asked of us in terms of obedience and generosity, why aren’t we doing better financially, and physically than those who ignore God. The common answer is the righteous will receive their reward in the next life. But disciples and followers have enjoyed happier lives than those who chase things for their joy. We receive much more joy in relationships than we ever will with things. So a life in relationship with God can be a life that is rewarded here and in the next life.

Is your life happy and joyful? What do you attribute this happiness and joy to?

Those who trust in God and keep His commandments will receive a share of salvation, while those who act violently and unjustly to make themselves rich in earthly goods will receive no such reward. Those who find delight in the LORD… Click To Tweet
