as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18 NABRE
The second Letter to the Corinthians has Paul writing to clear some things up and prepare the way for a future visit to this community he founded and with whom he has a father’s love. He challenges them to attend to their own character and he defends his way of being an Apostle, outlining his obedience to God. In the letter Paul writes about his apostleship and discusses how it includes suffering. He bears his suffering as dying for Jesus, who died and has risen in glory. Paul writes, this is our hope. Although our bodies are aging and “wasting away” our inner self is renewed day after day. What we suffer in the name of Jesus produces for us an eternal glory beyond compare. Paul writes, don’t look at what you see but depend on what you do not see. Here speaking of the Spirit of God, giving strength, joy, peace and more. Concluding with the quoted verse, what we see, everything around us will disappear, what we do not seen, our inner self is eternal. Bear Jesus in life we too will have eternal glory. For Paul this is his hope, and he tells the Corinthians as well as us, it is our hope.
For Paul anything done in the name of Jesus is an opportunity to be like Jesus. If we suffer with Him, die with Him, we will be raised with Him. This can occur many times in our day, our week, our life and after our life has faded away. The model of death and resurrection exist everywhere. Paul is like the farmer who plants the seed and watches and cares for it to grow. Our life should be the same. Be planted and grow in Jesus and bloom eternally.
Do you attend to the Spirit building your inner self? Do you worry more about what you see or do you focus on things you can’t see?
Paul is like the farmer who plants the seed and watches and cares for it to grow. Our life should be the same. Be planted and grow in Jesus and bloom eternally.
