You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NABRE
The prophet Micah is God’s spokesman calling people to conversion. He is convinced that God is faithful, and therefore the message he preaches is always wrapped in hope and future salvation. Micah is a book that threatens, then promises deliverance, threats and promises alternating throughout and finally a message of hope. Chapter six is God’s condemnation and judgement in the area of religious observances; church people follow the rules of their church, but do not support justice or charity. Following rules but ignoring the hungry is condemned by God. The quoted verse says; you have been told, my people, what is good and what the LORD requires. The LORD requires justice (which is fairness, peace and genuine respect for others), the LORD requires us to love goodness and the LORD requires we walk humbly. The LORD is not impressed with perfect rule followers, it is love that impresses. To love someone is to show to them their beauty, their worth and their importance. Love is action. We are told by God what is good, to be just and to see others as more important than ourselves. Micha is a prophet who lived during the seventh century BC and shares the same message that Jesus brings years later; love; love God and love everyone always.
Sometimes we think to be good means to follow the rules and go along with society. But to be a person who shows God to the world we actually need to flip the rules and culture on their head. Reach out to the poor and you are good, welcome the alien and you are just, promote the other before all you are humble. This is the walk with God.
When were you just before God? When were you good before God? When did you walk humbly with your God?
