Take with you words, and return to the LORD; Say to him, “Forgive all iniquity, and take what is good. Let us offer the fruit of our lips.” Hosea 14:3 NABRE
The book of Hosea closes with a similar pattern as most of the prophecy, a denunciation of Israel’s infidelity followed by a blessing of the Lord. Previously salvation and forgiveness have been offered by the Lord spontaneously and generously, without Israel being asked for anything; but here the prophet earnestly asks Israel to be converted that God may heal her unfaithfulness. The Lord benevolently offers the people reconciliation and a cure for their unfaithfulness. The imagery of love is spoken of and the Lord is portrayed in several attractive images, the dew, the fragrance of a Lebanon grain and the vine, all standing for the good things the Lord bestows on the people, He is a cypress, evergreen, always stable and enduring. The book concludes; since the Lord loves the people so deeply, there is nothing the people can do but respond; the Beloved who is love, loves only, do not resist love.
The entire story of the prophet Hosea is to speak to the people about their lack of regard for God, but always saying God loves them and takes care of them anyway. He ends with a wisdom verse, whoever is wise, let them understand, the ways of the Lord are right. God as creator knows our desires for self, but tells us it is not the way to a most beneficial life. Rather, look to God and follow His prompting then live on a straight path without suffering and anguish, but with love and joy.
Do you learn the path of the Lord and follow it? Do you accept God’s love?
The Lord loves the people so deeply, there is nothing the people can do but respond; the Beloved who is love, loves only, do not resist love.
