I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. John 16:12 NABRE
Jesus continues speaking a final discourse to His disciples. He has told them about the coming of the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will give them power and grace to carry Jesus’ mission forward. Jesus says He must return to the one who sent Him so that the Advocate may come to them (and us.) Then He has this strange line saying there is so much more to tell them but they cannot bear it now. Jesus doesn’t want to overload them with information before they receive the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who gives them the ability to hear and understand all Jesus tells them and reminds them of all they heard. Jesus’ message is about His Father, God, who is their Father and the Father of us all. Jesus wants us all to know God has a personal relationship with every one of us, because we are children of God. The Holy Spirit will dwell within us and give us the confidence to know that we are children of God, and to accept this message. We cannot bear this information until we are ready and filled with the Spirit, then this message makes complete sense to us.
Jesus’ message about learning things in time, with the help of the Spirit is something we should remember for our journey through life. We receive messages and hope from God as we live. It is not God’s way that we be told everything we need to know from the beginning, but in time, through grace we can hear and understand, receiving messages which move us to becoming fully devoted disciples to God. Jesus calls us friend and so we can know everything, but it is important that we are ready. Being ready requires we live in the Spirit, or rather the Spirit lives in us.
Can you look back over your life to recall moments of inspiration? Do you realize you have the strength of the Spirit guiding you?
