Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” John 21:10 NABRE
Jesus comes to His disciples on the shore as they are fishing. It is the third time He appears to them after His resurrection. The disciples have returned to what they know. The have been trained by Jesus, they have been anointed by the Holy Spirit, but they still don’t seem to know what it is they are supposed to do without Jesus. They have traveled with Jesus for several years and everything was wonderful, but now they are without Him. So, they return to what they know, fishing. It is then that Christ calls to them from the shore, He tells them where to catch fish. When they do catch fish they realize, “It is the Lord.” They all head to Him once they recognize Him. On the shore He has started a fire with fish and bread on it. Yet, He still has them bring some of the fish they have caught. It is an example of how God depends on us to bring what we have. In this case Christ does not need what they have but He wants to use, what they have; He wants their participation in His mission. God wants to use what we have to accomplish His mission and His work in the world. From the beginning God’s first invitation is that we bring ourselves, our presence.
It is in building up the community of Christ that Christ’s mission is accomplished. We need one another, we depend on what we all have to care for and serve one another. Sometimes we can only listen, but being heard is so important. God has everything, but God wants us and wants us to bring our gifts, our love, our needs and share with others, so together Love is built up.
What do you bring to help God? Do you recognize and head to the Lord?
