There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many? John 6:9 NABRE
John shares an event; Jesus feeding a crowd who has come to see Him. This event is told by all four gospel writers, clearly it is a story that stays with the people present and who hear about it afterwards. Jesus’ feeding thousands is noteworthy and memorable for all who are connected in some way and today even us. This important event depends completely on the resources of a boy in the crowd, who for some reason may be the only one travelling with food for himself. Jesus accepts the boy’s offering and feeds thousands with an abundance leftover. The boy has exactly what Jesus needs to satiate everyone’s hunger. The boy has love and the heart to be present where Jesus is teaching and to share what he has brought for himself, not knowing if he will get anything to eat. Jesus’ miracle of feeding so many with so little is the main theme taken away from all the telling’s of this story. But there is another message; Jesus depends on us to share what we have. We might ask ourselves; what can God need from us, we have nothing God needs. We see God does need what we have and especially the little we have. The boy doesn’t share riches but his little is critical to the event. Without this boy and his five loaves and two fish the miracle does not occur, we never hear about it and Jesus’ fame does not spread as far as it did that particularly day.
Never underestimate the little things in your life, with God they can become very big things. A boy participates in a big miracle, not by doing anything extraordinary, but by living simply as he is and sharing what he has. We can do the same.
What little do you have God can use? Do you know God needs you?
