Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. Luke 12:37 NABRE
Jesus speaks about being vigilant, always alert for the coming of the Lord. Jesus tells His disciples His return time is unknown. So they should always be ready to receive Him, thus His return will not catch anyone by surprise. Often when we know we are having guests for a meal or party we will clean up our residence, and we might add celebration decorations because we want our guests to know how important they are to us and how grateful we are of their visit. But what can we do when someone surprises us, they see who we are day to day. Jesus says let your day to day self be the one who is ready for guests. Jesus uses a parable about a head of household being away and the servants have been responsible for the residence. They do not know when the head of house will return so they need to be vigilant. Jesus declares those who are ready for the head of the house at any time will be blessed; they are happy, revered, consecrated, holy even, because when the head of house returns there will be a banquet and from his joy he will serve the servants.
Jesus is speaking of His Second Coming and the Wedding Feast to be thrown. It will be a Eucharistic Celebration with Jesus serving the servants, much as we see in what is the Passover celebration Jesus hosted the night before His prosecution. Jesus is among us as one who serves. This is our calling as disciples, we serve those who are the least, who we might expect should be serving us. Every feast, every celebration should include the least, so that they may know Jesus serves them, through us.
Are you always ready for guests? Is your heart always ready to receive Jesus?
