But Herod said, “John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him. Luke 9:9 NABRE
Hearing all the news frequently appearing through the Galilean ministry, Herod raises the question of Jesus’ identity. Herod who is Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, ruled over Galilee and Perea all during the life of Jesus and after. His official title tetrarch indicates he is the ruler of a certain area, it might be similar to what we consider a Prince. Herod is getting reports about all Jesus has done and how His popularity has grown. Herod is the one who had John the Baptist beheaded and hears reports that Jesus is John the Baptist raised from the dead. There are other reports that Jesus is the prophet Moses, or Elijah and although the reports are inaccurate, they correctly recognize Jesus as a prophetic figure. Herod is trying to see Jesus, perhaps with evil intent and knowing what Herod did to John, Jesus may not be so eager to see him. The gospels never mention Jesus visiting Herod’s capital cities, it is not a confrontation with the political establishment that Jesus seeks.
It is noteworthy that one of the ruling leaders has heard of Jesus, all Jesus has done has come to the attention of Herod. Jesus is one person who has changed the course of history, this should surprise us, but even in His day Jesus has an impact on all within His purview. This is a witness to how if we are following the will of God, our little actions can be multiplied and broadened so even the political leaders will see God’s work through us.
Do you depend on God to lead your daily actions? Can you see your work influencing political leaders?
