Softer than butter is his speech, but war is in his heart. Smoother than oil are his words, but they are unsheathed swords. Psalms 55:22 NABRE
Psalm 55 is a conversation the Psalmist is having either with himself or with the Lord. He has been betrayed by a trusted and familiar friend, someone who walked with him, even in fellowship to the Lord. This friend has turned on him and made himself an enemy. The Psalmist begins by asking the Lord to hear him as he describes his pain and surprise. The quoted verse describes the hypocrisy of the friend. He says nice things, but has wicked intentions on his mind. There is nothing more hurtful than a friend turning on you and speaking about you to others with malice. The Psalmist concludes by trusting the Lord, who will give this traitor what he deserves. Although the Psalmist is hurt, he trust God and tries to forget it. This Psalm is a preview of Jesus and Judas. Judas a close friend of Jesus, especially selected as an Apostle, in the end sells his friendship with Jesus betraying Him. We don’t see Jesus reacting to this betrayal toward Judas. We do learn that Judas is despaired by what he has done and commits suicide. Jesus, like the Psalmist, trust in God, and goes on to do the will of the Father, leaving the fate of Judas to God.
Remember this Psalm with any betrayal you might feel in your life. It is not for us to get revenge or make the betrayer pay, we are to trust in the Lord. The Lord will do what is best, for the one who broke trust and for us. Let go of any grudge, try to forgive and move on. @craiggroeschel in his message this past weekend reminded us that as Christians forgiveness is not optional. He recommends to begin forgiving by praying for the person who betrayed us.
Is there someone in your life that has betrayed you? Can you pray for that person? Can you forgive that person?
