And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof.” Luke 7:6 NABRE
Jesus is approached by local Synagogue leaders about a Centurion (a commander of about one hundred soldiers) who is a friend of the Jews. The Centurion’s slave is about to die and the Centurion cares deeply for this slave and wishes Jesus would heal him. The Centurion himself is respected by these local religious leaders and speaking to Jesus on his behalf make a case for why Jesus should help. As Jesus begins the journey to the Centurions house, others in his service meet Jesus to say the Centurion is not worthy to have Jesus in his home. The Centurion is a gentile and Jews were not allowed to enter the house of a gentile. This Centurion shows respect for the Jewish customs and rituals. If Jesus would just say a word the slave will be healed. Jesus has a rare moment of amazement at the Centurion’s faith and the slave is healed by Jesus word.
Today this kind of awe and respect is rare. Going back a number of years we can see this kind of respect for simple leaders like Gandhi, or Mother Theresa. Their visit to world leaders was witness to a great respect. But do we see respect for one another or a certain awe, (an exception may be celebrities.) Do you think you are worthy to have Jesus in your home? Are you worthy of Jesus entering you spiritually? Jesus desires to come, to heal, but are we grace filled and ready to receive Him. Today we need Jesus to come, we should desire His presence with us always and be worthy of His presence. We should also recognize Jesus in others and show them respect.
Can you get prepared for Jesus to enter under your roof? Do you desire Jesus’s presence?
Today we need Jesus to come, we should desire His presence with us always and be worthy of His presence. We should also recognize Jesus in others and show them respect.
