Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” but not do what I command? Luke 6:46 NABRE
Jesus provides an example of how you can tell if someone is good. You can tell by what they produce, a good person with a good heart produces good, but an evil person with an evil heart produces evil, from the heart we can know the good and the evil. Jesus also says if a person listens to His words and acts on them they will build a good foundation and their good deeds will survive any bad that may come in their life. Jesus expects anyone who calls Him “Lord, Lord” will do what He commands. Jesus teaches with divine authority which is possible because He is “Lord, Lord.” Jesus wants those hearing and reading these passages to know that His teaching is about Him. Produce good because you are a disciple of Jesus and you do what he commands. Build a life with a solid foundation based on the words and message of Jesus because you area disciples of Jesus and you do what He commands. Someone who listens to Jesus’ words and acts upon them will do what Jesus commands. Following Jesus is more than knowing the words but acting in like manner as Jesus. If people see what we produce, or understand our life and they cannot see that we are declaring Jesus, “Lord, Lord,” then we are not doing what Jesus commands. Jesus’ commands are difficult and when doing them people stand out.
Imagine seeing someone broken down on the highway, and asking what would Jesus do to help? Some might say Jesus would stop and give the person the keys to His car and send Him on their way. We might think this is extreme, but to get recognition for others to follow Jesus, extreme may be necessary. Doing what Jesus commands should require sacrifice. Often when I give it comes from my excess, I rarely sacrifice in my giving.
How do you follow Jesus’ commands? What does your life produce?
To get recognition for others to follow Jesus, extreme action may be necessary. Doing what Jesus commands should require sacrifice.
