Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17 NABRE
Romans is Paul reaching out to a community he has not founded or visited. Therefore it is more general than other letters and has a deep spiritual and theological flavor. In chapter ten Paul is speaking about a lack of commitment of the Hebrew people in coming to the gospel of Jesus. Paul has seen many Gentiles come to faith (isn’t it always the new comer who jumps is unswervingly?) but the majority of his own people are resisting. Paul says their failure to believe is more about misunderstanding the purpose of the law and not a lack of listening to the gospel. For many the law becomes the end, not a means; the message of the gospel is love, not law. The quoted verse makes the point; we cannot have faith if we do not hear the gospels, and what is heard is from the Messiah. If we are not listening, not spending time in scripture, not trying to hear the teaching of Jesus, then we cannot possibly have faith. We cannot have faith in what we do not know. Paul reminds the Hebrew people they have heard from the prophets and ancestors foretelling of the Messiah and Paul and others, continue to spread the good news of Jesus message wherever they are able.
There is a saying, “you don’t know what you don’t know” which seems true enough. It maps to Paul’s verse, you cannot believe what you haven’t heard. Jesus followers must have faith, if we don’t know Jesus’ message, than what do we have faith in? The best way to hear is to spend time in scripture, read a passage, think about it, maybe journal about its impact on you. We need to exercise spiritually if we want to have strong faith muscles.
Are you spending time with the message of Jesus? If you have questions ask, there are many willing to help, you will be encouraging them by asking!
