Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. Matthew 12:40 NABRE
Jesus is challenged by the religious leaders to show a sign demonstrating who He is and who has sent Him. Jesus has shown plenty of signs in the past, healings and exorcisms that His critics have not believed or explain as the work of demons. Even if Jesus performs another sign before their eyes, they will find a way to deny it proves anything. Jesus refuses to give a sign other than the sign of Jonah who spent three days in the belly of a whale. Jesus ties Jonah’s experience to His time in the tomb after His death leading to resurrection. For many resurrection is the most fantastic sign demonstrating Jesus is the Messiah, the One who comes to lead everyone to freedom and to walk towards God. Jesus has spoken often about His suffering as a sign. Yet, the claim of resurrection is so fantastic even those closet to Him are unable to understand His meaning, until they have witnessed Jesus resurrection following His gruesome death. Even those who have only heard and not seen the resurrected Jesus struggle to believe.
We today read theses words of Jesus and can easily apply there meaning to Jesus death and resurrection. We have not seen Jesus resurrection and our belief requires faith and grace from God. If we do believe our life can be a sign for others.
Can you imagine your reaction to Jesus declaring Jonah as a sign? Does your faith lead you to believe in resurrection?
