Then he began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. Matthew 11:20 NABRE
Several towns in Galilee Jesus has spent much of His time and when He sees their lives He sees little or no repentance. Jesus therefore disapproves of the towns and prophesizes their demise. Jesus chose Capernaum as His new home in Galilee and so they witness His teaching and miraculous events regularly, yet they are not changing their lives. Two other towns within walking distance have the same opportunities to witness Jesus and do not change their ways. We read in scripture of towns that have been condemn which will fare better in the final judgement because they did not have the privilege of Jesus’ presence. For us this should be a message of learning from other’s mistakes. We followers of Jesus have the words of Jesus and the privilege of knowing Jesus day to day. We can pray with Jesus and live with the joy of knowing our life is better because we are disciples of Jesus. But do we apply what we know to our daily lives? Have we responded to the privilege of faith? Applying scripture to our lives means learning from the mistakes of others. Will we, unlike these towns in Galilee, take advantage of the time that is ours to repent of sinful ways and pursue holiness? We may think there is always time to make changes but if we are like these town putting it off until some future event we may lose the chance and be reproached by Jesus as well.
We have great privilege as followers of Jesus. From the moment we began to read and hear about the Messiah until our last breath we can grow in holiness. We must ensure we don’t procrastinate.
