Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. John 16:32 NABRE
Jesus tells His disciples directly He is leaving the world and they feel like He is speaking in a manner they finally understand; they say He is speaking plainly. With this they realize everything Jesus has done and they believe in Him. But Jesus knows them and their human nature, saying they will scatter when there comes a time when they will be challenged about knowing Him. Jesus also knows the Father, trusting the Father will always be with Him. Previously Jesus has said, “The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” (John 8:29) We can recognize a clear contrast, Jesus expects the weakness of His human friends yet He trust the strength and dependability of Our Father. I imagine we have the same suspicions about friends and family when it comes to complete trust, we will always have a little doubt about their strength and dependability.
The message to grab is that the God who created us, who is with us, will never leave us. We are never alone, never without support and strength, we simply need to trust as Jesus trust. God knows human nature, our inclination to put ourselves first, no matter the expense to those around us, even those we love. It began with the first humans and continues today. You don’t have to be omniscient to know that humans will let you down, sometimes even when they don’t want to. But God has perpetual hope, always allowing humanity to make their own choices, even to crucify Jesus, but hoping we will trust His plan and do what is righteous and not always self-serving.
Do you think God has hope in us? Is it possible to hope even knowing the outcome?
