No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. John 6:44 NABRE
Jesus points out that the way to come to Him is being drawn by the Father. The creator of the universe puts in our hearts the desire for something more, something greater. We often hear the quote from Augustine of Hippo, from his Confessions, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” God in creating us makes us restless, we are always seeking, desiring, needing something. Often we are seeking things that can not satisfy us, things when we acquire or achieve them are not enough for us, and we want more. But when we seek God, then we can achieve satisfaction. It is remarkable that Jesus, who is the Son of God, cannot convince someone to come to Him if they are not draw to Him by God. Even Jesus cannot make people want Him, without their first having a certain curiosity which is placed in the heart by God. Often we feel challenged to invite others to come to church, or to meet Jesus in some way. We realize this can be a prompting from God, but when we hear, “no thank you,” we can take solace in knowing no means not yet, or God has not inspired me to go there yet, or I am not ready. Jesus is often telling us one lost is too many for God, God does not want to lose one of His creation, therefore we can depend on the idea that God is constantly nudging people toward the only One who can satisfy them, pushing on that restless heart.
We too are challenged to find the only One who can satisfy. We may feel more “things” is what we need, or perhaps another vacation, or a new friend, but in fact only God can satisfy our restless heart and bring us peace, joy and complete satisfaction.
What is it your heart truly desires? Do you find yourself constantly restless?
God in creating us makes us restless, we are always seeking, desiring, needing something. Only God can satisfy our restless heart and bring us peace, joy and complete satisfaction.
