In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. Luke 1:26-27 NABRE
An angel appears to a young girl, the wife of Joseph, and announces God favors her and wants her to be the mother of His Son, Jesus. Often stressed is that Joseph has not yet taken Mary into his house and thus they have not consummated the marriage. Mary given the honor to be mother of Jesus, has her life changed significantly. The question I often wonder about is why? God certainly could have created a Son fully mature if He desired. He could have left a Son in the river like Moses. God doesn’t want Jesus to be different in any way, He wants a woman to be the mother of His Son and so He begins life like each of us in our mother’s womb. Why Mary? This is impossible to know, she may not have been the most devout woman of the land, many speculate she was barely a teenager. God does favor Mary, she is in the right place at the right time. God favors motherhood for all His children. Mary was chosen for Jesus, and God depends on all mothers daily. It is in the DNA of His creation.
God’s dependence on mothers began at His creation; asking them to sacrifice, and to be willing to give their life for each of us. We likely wouldn’t be born, let alone make it to an age where we can turn to God in adoration and worship if not for mothers. The annunciation of God incarnate is to Mary, but it could have been to any God loving potential mother. Motherhood is a special grace God opens for those special ladies who understand its importance and are willing to say yes for a son or daughter. God is saying I am dependent on mother’s, Mary for my Son but all mothers for all my children.
What sacrifices has your mother made for you? Are you grateful for mothers?
