Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.” Matthew 1:20 NABRE
Joseph discovers His betrothed, Mary, is pregnant and he knows he cannot be the father. He is ready to quietly divorce Mary when he is visited by an angel, a messenger from God. The angel tells Joseph that Mary has conceived through God and that he should complete the marriage process and accept Mary into his home as is tradition. Joseph follows the command of the angel and takes Mary into his home and she has a son that Joseph names Jesus according to the instruction from the angel. In later verses the angel tells Joseph that Jesus will save people from their sins. Joseph hears that Jesus not God will be the savior, saving people from their sins not from the political oppression they are experiencing under the Romans. Matthew includes this story early in his message so we know Jesus’ origin, and that all who are guiding Jesus birth and maturity are aware of His divine nature and the mission He is to accomplish. It helps us reading thousands of years later to have faith in God who sent His son for the benefit of all.
Joseph has an important role in the naming of Jesus as He claimed him as an heir, not only of himself but of the line of King David as scripture prophesizes; the Anointed One, the Savior, will come from King David. Joseph only has a minor appearance in the gospel after this incident, so we know this message is important. Joseph is a devout follower of God who fulfills his role of developing and announcing the salvation story. If he can believe so should we.
Where does your faith come from? How would you respond if you were Joseph?
