And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Luke 2:19 NABRE
Luke has captured the Nativity story and the events following the birth of Jesus. Luke is a gospel writer who was a companion to Paul and derived much of his gospel from the gospel of Mark. It is unlikely Luke met or knew Jesus, many think his gospel was written approximately forty years after the death of Jesus. Luke relies on information from other sources, including Mark. The story of Jesus’ birth, including place and the events occurring after Jesus birth came from someone familiar with the events. Luke declares Mary, the Mother of Jesus, held all the stories in her heart reflecting on them, as if she knew one day she would tell the stories for future generations. After Jesus dies, Mary continued with Jesus’ disciples, in particular John. We can imagine word getting out that Mary the Mother of Jesus is in a community, some say Ephesus, and those leaders of the Christian movement coming to her and listening to what she has been reflecting in her heart. Listening about the beginning of Jesus, Joseph and her journey together. Thankfully she has told these stories so that we can have them today. It is unlikely Christmas would be as big an event in modernity if we did not have these events as Luke describes.
The telling of stories is important in Christian community. Luke has all his stories because the events of Jesus is passed on from one person to another, one leader to another. At a certain point they are captured in scrolls and we are blessed to have all these stories today. Followers today are doing things that forward the message of Jesus. We have stories of our faith journey and those we have influenced. Tell your story, it will impact the future of Christianity.
