Psalms 85:8 – November 29, 2020

Show us, LORD, your mercy; grant us your salvation. Psalms 85:8 NABRE

This psalm describes Israel’s return from the Babylonian exile to build the Second Temple. This return was not enduring because the Second Temple was eventually destroyed. Therefore, the long suffering nation yearns for a permanent redemption in which God will be completely reconciled to His land. God will show this reconciliation through fertile land, producing and providing an abundance. In America, we have an abundance of resources. We often ask for blessing. If we pay attention we know God has blessed America. We also know we desire to be good, though there are times we are wanting. We want to be worthy of redemption but we sometimes see others as enemies, we don’t love enemies, we don’t pray for them. No matter God shows us mercy, God overlooks our deficiencies and we are blessed. Furthermore God shows us redemption. The Israelites were freed from Babylonian captivity but were again oppressed by the Roman occupation. Even in the midst of this God is with them, God’s kindness is endless and His salvation always available. As followers of Jesus, care for others is paramount. We are having many difficulties, people need work, we are not free to live life as we wish because we must consider others and the spreading of the coronavirus. Yet, in all this God still shows mercy and grants us salvation. We are blessed, we have much, even when we aren’t the best disciples.

We may think we have it hard, but someone is always in greater difficulty, while others will receive more in life than us. We are never abandoned or given more than we can handle, God always shares mercy and salvation. We must do the same.

Are you merciful and offering aid to those in need? Do you enjoy God’s mercy and salvation?
