Luke tells of a healing that occurs with Jesus and ten men who have a skin disease called leprosy. Leprosy is more a social disease than anything life threatening because it is considered contagious and anyone who suffers from the disease is required to separate themselves from others, even during Jesus time wearing a bell so people know someone with the disease is coming. In the healing story, ten men with similar symptoms form some kind of community of their own, staying together. Yet, even with companionship they are not satisfied, and still desire healing so they may return to their villages and families. Therefore as Jesus is passing they call out to Him, have pity on us. Jesus responds telling them go see the priests. Anyone who has this skin disease and is healed for any reason is required by law to see the priests who would declare them cured or not. Whatever the priest decides allows the person to return to their former life or continue in isolation. It is critical to get the priest approval. These ten men do what Jesus tells them, they begin the journey to see the priests, even though they have not been healed. Luke tells us the ten were cleansed, healed on the journey. The story concludes with Jesus declaring it was faith that causes the healing, the faith of those who left for the priests without any change in their physical appearance.
When Jesus speaks of faith this is what is meant, a faith that allows us to do what we know is righteous even without evidence we will succeed. We believe in God without seeing Him. We pray without evidence of being answered. We take a leap, believing we will be caught by God and succeed.
