Blessed those who do what is right, whose deeds are always just. Psalms 106:3 NABRE
Psalm one hundred six relates a narrative of how God miraculously sustained the Jews as they wandered for forty years. God led the Israelites into the land Canaan and empowered them to conquer their adversaries despite overwhelming odds. God repeatedly performed so many wonders that the Psalmist exclaims “Who can recount the mighty deeds of the LORD, proclaim in full God’s praise?” (106:2) However, even while God was displaying unprecedented kindness to Israel, the Israelites were negligent in their duties toward God, and they failed to appreciate His wonders. They defied God’s representative Moses, and rebelled against his commands. This defiance initiated the spiritual and moral decline which eventually leads to the Jew’s exile from the Holy Land. Completing the description of Israel’s infidelity and exile the psalm closes with a prayer for redemption, “Save us, LORD, our God; gather us from among the nations that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in praising you.” (106:47) The second verse wonders who can count all God’s mighty deeds and give praise, the quoted verse goes on to say praiseworthy are those who are always just. But is it possible to always do what is right? That is doing what is right without interruption? An example can be the person who supports their sons and daughters while small or take in an orphan and arrange for their entire life including marriage when they come of age. The verse declares consistency, doing what is right always.
In biblical language only God is always right, or righteous. Followers of God are expected to always do what is right and just. It is a challenge and it requires remaining close to God and depending on God’s aide.
Do you depend on God to be right? Are you always just?
