You who love the LORD, hate evil, he protects the souls of the faithful, rescues them from the hand of the wicked. Psalms 97:10 NABRE
It is said that Moses dedicated this psalm to the tribe of Joseph (with sons Ephraim and Manasseh) from whom Joshua is descended. Joshua would conquer the land of Canaan in God’s name, and this victory is described in the opening verse; “The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad.” (Psalms 97:1) The psalm begins with God coming in a storm, Israel rejoices in the overthrowing of idol worshipers and their gods, and the rewarding of the faithful righteous. It is stressing God reigns, His presence will fill the land and the earth will exult. The quoted verse speaks particularly about uprooting all evil. If you have a garden you can’t allow some weeds to survive, eventually they will overtake the entire garden. So if we want to have the love of God in our heart we must uproot every trace of evil from our person. We may fear the wicked because they seem to be prosperous and successful, giving the impression God protects them. But God will demonstrate He is supreme, toppling all gods, no matter who or what they may be. Those who love God must despise evil without any fear of reprisal. God always guards the souls of the faithful, rescuing them from the wicked. God does not interfere with the free will of the wicked but God does protect those devout from plans of evildoers that might be directed against them.
We may not see or know God’s plans but with faith we know God protects us who love Him and despise evil. We trust God, doing our best to be children of God. If we hear the word of God and apply it to our lives, we will be righteous. We are safe with God, no matter how life may try to knock us down.
Do you see God victorious in your life? Do you despise evil?
