They proclaimed: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” Luke 19:38 NABRE
Jesus is travelling to Jerusalem for His last trip. He knows He has the crucifixion ahead of Him. He has a plan how He wants to enter town, He will ride on a donkey. In times of war a King rode into town on a horse, in times of peace he rode into town on a donkey. Jesus knew He would be reminding the people of a King. After all his miracles and the deeds He has performed they are looking to Him as someone very special, a King, the Messiah. But it all came to a joyful parade as He enters town and the people rejoiced, placing their cloaks to cover the dirt and proclaiming words from Psalm 118, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” The word King is inserted for the word “he” in their praise. This proclamation concerns the religious leadership and they tell Jesus to rebuke them for speaking about a king and proclaiming a time of peace. But Jesus says, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!” (Luke 19:40) It was a time of praise for Jesus, which would also lead the religious leaders to step up their effort to have Jesus condemned. Jesus’ actions brought too much attention from the governing Romans and it was turning the people against the religious leaders. They had to plot to stop Him out of fear of losing their status with the Romans and the people. Jesus is pushing hard against the leaders so that they would enact God’s plan for salvation.
Jesus never took glory for Himself and yet in this moment He seems to orchestrate praise to do God’s will. Sometimes we have to get others attention on us so that we can point them toward God.
Do you see Jesus as a King? How would you react to Jesus entering your home?
