Oh, that today you would hear his voice: Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the desert. Psalms 95:7-8 NABRE
Psalm 95 praises God and calls people to listen to the Lord’s voice. It begins with an invitation, “O come.” inviting us to contemplate God as ruler, as King. He is King over all the heavenly powers and over every part of the earth. He is King of the people He created, who he nourishes and guides, He is their shepherd and cares for them as a shepherd over his flock. Then as if God began speaking the words of the psalm we hear, today if you hear his voice, do not test Him as your ancestors did in the wilderness. God is speaking of the time when the people rebelled against Moses demanding water, as if God has not taken care of them during their desert journey. The words speak about testing, Massah is a Hebrew word meaning, “the place of test” and Meribah means “the place of the strife, of quarreling.” The listener is being warned not to let happen to their generation what happened to the generation who did test God. To test God is not recognizing all the deeds He does and has done and trying to force some proof out of God. In the reference case the people demand water from Moses and were ready to put him to death. God rewarded their testing by having them wander in the desert until all of their generation passed away, forty years. The key message; if we hear God’s voice, don’t challenge Him, rather welcome Him into your day.
God speaking to us can be scary, the common first words when God greets someone is, “Do not be afraid.” Hearing God can be a shock. But if God speaks to us it is because He knows we are ready and can help. So be open, spend time listening and welcome God’s word.
Do you test God in prayer? Are you listening to hear God speak to you?
The key message; if we hear God's voice, don't challenge Him, rather welcome Him into your day.
