My foes treat me harshly all the day; yes, many are my attackers. Psalms 56:3 NABRE
This is a psalm proclaimed by someone who is being pursued and plotted against. The psalmist put his trust in God, knowing God is stronger than man. It opens with a plea, “Be Gracious to me, O God.” It is a prayer containing supplication by someone who puts his trust in God. He declares what his enemies are doing to him, asking God to take account of his pain and cause those doing harm to turn back, for he trusts in the Lord and has no fear of man. Finally he admits to God that he knows that the promises he made are still unfilled, even though God has already granted his prayer. Men may plot constantly and combine forces but they cannot hurt someone who puts his trust in God. The psalm praises God for His promise of salvation. All trust should be placed in God and we will have no fear. Similar words are heard in Hebrews; “Thus we may say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper, [and] I will not be afraid.” (13:6) Our prayers should always go to God for protection first. We pray with complete faith and trust in God and we will be heard and protected. “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Fear accomplishes nothing, it stifles us and doesn’t allow the work of God to continue. So in all things ask God for protection.
There are times when something does make us afraid, a threat, the loss of financial stability, a job loss, sickness, or some other calamity in life. We should move to prayer, asking for God’s protection. Fear is not helpful, the sooner we can remove it from any situation the sooner we are able to proceed in a manner pleasing to God and more beneficial to ourselves.
Have you experienced fear? How do you react when afraid?
