through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:4-5 NABRE
John opens his gospel with beautiful poetry about Christ, whom he refers to in a number of ways; the Word, the light of the world, the Father’s only Son. John speaks of the Word of God being with the Father from all eternity. He was at work in creation and the history of Israel, in time He became the incarnate Jesus. John recounts the divine Word’s activity in creation. Paul writes, “For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17) Jesus entered into humanity, divine and human, although it is impossible to know how much the human Jesus knew about the divine Christ. Though Him was life, and life made in the image of God. We have a soul and can know God. As Light no darkness can overcome Him. Darkness can be as sin, putting our self above all else, pushing our self away from the Light. But the Light is always available and we can always rejoin the Light. Light is always before us, seeking us and is always shinning so we may see our return to the light.
We think often our life depends on what we can do for ourselves. But in fact we read our life has always been dependent on the Word, on the Light, on Christ. We are free to step away from this dependency, but we never improve our condition by so doing. We must live in the Light to have life, to build something out of our life worthwhile.
Do you believe the Word became flesh? Do you live in the light?
