I raise my eyes toward the mountains. From whence shall come my help? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. Psalms 121:1-2 NABRE
Psalm one-twenty-one speaks of trust in the LORD who is our protector. The psalmist looks to the mountains, perhaps as a wondering about God, or in trustfulness that God met Moses on Mount Zion. But when he looks, he thinks of the LORD who will be his helper, the LORD who made heaven and earth. Once he has thought of the LORD as his protector he goes on to speak of the LORD as his keeper. The LORD won’t allow a misstep and He won’t sleep on the job. His protection is full, every second of every day. The LORD protects us from evil the same way the shade protects people from the hot sun, and the moon’s beams (which were also thought to be harmful.) Everything we do, going in and coming out, from the possibility of all evil, our complete life, from now until the end of time, the LORD protects us. We may remain a sinner but God is faithful. God will not let us be tested beyond our strength, so temptation can be resisted and success possible. God looks over us as a mother who is watching the first steps of her child. God will never let us out of His sight. The Christian should know that God is faithful and protector, seeing our struggles and temptation, but always on our side.
We may think life is hard, to do the right thing a challenge. But the message from the psalm; it will never be too hard, we will be challenged but this is an aid to help us to grow, never to overwhelm us. We can thank God for the “just right amount” of challenges and the blessing of protection. Our help comes from the Lord, we can count on Him.
Do you feel protected by God? Do you expect to succeed against evil?
