Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7 NABRE
From the Wisdom of Solomon we have the statement fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. This comment does not want us to be afraid of or cower before the Lord. It encourages us to respect the Lord, understand His power, His presence, understand He is mighty and worthy of our respect. God is the creator of the universe, the creator of us, only God can create. We have the ability and knowledge to turn something into something else, but to create something from nothing is beyond our ability. So to respect the Lord we are open to knowledge. Wisdom comes from the one who created everything. When we depend on the Lord for wisdom it will come to us. But, the fool despises wisdom and discipline. The fool is not someone with a low IQ, or lacking education. A fool by definition is someone who is unwise, imprudent, someone who does not focus on what is important. The fool does not live in reality, they focus on fantasy. They talk a lot without knowing what they are talking about. Many times they speak lies and slander, it is their specialty. The fool finds it much easier to talk about things than to hear God’s word and obey, or at least trying to be disciplined enough to go deeper in God’s word. The word of God helps people live in reality and make wise decisions. Knowing God and learning His word is the beginning of knowledge, the fool cannot deal with reality and so they have no wisdom or discipline.
Anyone can be a fool, but there is no glory for a fool. Seek out God’s word, seek out God, and you will have knowledge beyond your capacity and a life filled with joy.
Do you seek the Lord and all His knowledge? Have you met a fool and rejoice that you are not one?
