Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 NABRE
Paul is writing to the community at Colossae as he heard of teachers challenging the following of Christ through a declared relationship to the cosmos and angels. Paul addresses the community about Christ declaring His redemptive power and the spiritual renewal that occurs for those who have been baptized in Christ; reminding them Christ died and rose again. Christians do not need to worry about spirits, or defilement through ascetical practices in regard to food and drink. True Christians should conquer personal sin and love their neighbor as Christ has loved us. Paul addressing the Christian family and slaves writes they must focus on love, obedience and service rendered to the Lord. In the quoted verse we read the heart is to be followed. It is important to keep our heart pure, whatever is in our heart will eventually come out. We should follow the will of God; in doing so we will be pleasing to God. When God is pleased we will receive an inheritance from Him, which will be more splendid than anything we could imagine. Paul insists if we are going to be slaves to anything we should be slaves to Christ.
We may not think we are slaves, but much can take over our lives. Maybe our work is so important to us we constantly focus on it. Perhaps it is a drug or alcohol or pornography that gets our attention. Maybe we over do other things like eating, or exercising, or social media. When something gets an inordinate amount of our attention we are slave to that thing. Only be a slave to Christ.
Is Christ your priority? Do you guard your heart so only good gets in?
