For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. John 3:20-21 NABRE
John the gospel writer does a contrast between light and dark. He says the Light came into the world. The Father sent His Son Jesus into the world out of love. The Light comes into a fallen world which is enshrouded in the darkness of sin. The Light shines in the world and its presence provokes a response, people either have faith or unbelief, people will receive the Light or reject it. John tells us those who do wicked things, those wanting to continue in evil, being self-centered, self-interested and putting themselves before others, hate the light. This is not surprising, no one wants to be evil where everyone can see, all evil is done in the dark away from everyone’s vision, so what is being done is not exposed. Therefore if we are attached to evil acts, or those things that we wouldn’t do if we knew we were being watched, we reject the light. But whoever wants to have faith in the Son of God, they will step into the Light. They will come to Christ in faith turning away from evil and sin. The people who come to the Light will embrace a life of love and imitation of Jesus. Animated by God’s power, the divine light reveals our true character and our works will be clearly seen as done by God.
It seems a wonderful metaphor, light and dark for good and evil, but it means much more. Those who are doing a great work for God want it to be seen, not to receive their own glory, but that the glory of God may be revealed. Working in the Light means God’s message is shared.
Do you do things in the dark? What does it mean to have faith in the Light?
