James 1:5 – June 26, 2019

But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it. James 1:5 NABRE

James opens his letter to the tribes of Israel spread throughput the known world by telling them there will be trials, testing and they will need perseverance. Then he comes to the quoted line where he tells them if they lack wisdom, ask God, who gives generously and ungrudgingly and it will be given. Wisdom is practical and enables a person to succeed in life. Even more we hear James imply that trials and testing can be joy and become perfect if a person has wisdom. Wisdom for James supplies a divine perspective that enables the withstanding of trials with perseverance. Wisdom allows living a godly, virtuous, manner, especially in times of suffering. It brings a spiritual maturity that is a gift from God that we cannot attain on our own effort, we must ask God for the gift of wisdom. Wisdom will be attained through prayer so it is important to turn to God, who is readily generous and gives ungrudgingly. We don’t ever worry about God not giving enough, He is a God who gives abundantly and He is never reluctant. God wants us to turn to Him for help. The next passage from James exhorts to ask in faith, confident and there is no denial. However, if you have doubt you are like a person with two minds and God will not trust in your use of the gift.

Wisdom was the great gift given Solomon who did great works in the name of God. We are called to share with God the work of creating His Kingdom. In order to help create we must be wise. Trust your prayer and ask God for wisdom, like one of the greatest Kings of all time.

Do you put value in wisdom? How much more wise is wisdom coming from the divine?
