Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24 NABRE
In Chapter 5 of John’s Gospel, Jesus performs a sign, the healing of a paralytic man. This causes trouble for Jesus as the religious leadership were concerned that Jesus would undermine their authority and get them in trouble with the Roman government. They accused Jesus of working on the Sabbath and breaking the law. In the face of their accusation Jesus goes into a teaching on His relationship with His Father. He first tells them He cannot do anything on His own, only what He has seen the Father doing. The Father loves the Son and has shown Him everything. The Father raises life and so will the Son. Jesus indicates everyone should honor the Son as they honor the Father. The way to honor the Son is to hear His word, which is truly the word of the Father and believe. First is the belief that the Father sent Jesus. Believing means yielding to the word and taking it into our hearts and putting the word into action. Anyone who hears and believes will have eternal life, and will not be condemned. Those once dead are alive. This hearing, believing and having eternal life all take place in the present moment, plus there is effect in the future. We know to live now as if our life is eternal. We will pass through death, a door to another place down the road, and will always have life.
Jesus entered into humanity to bring us eternal life. Death is defeated by Jesus presence, death and resurrection. When we know our life will never end we should live as though our effect in the world is eternal, this is belief. No need to rush to a finish, we will have time for it all.
Do you believe in the word of God? Do you show belief in action?
When we know our life will never end we should live as though our effect in the world is eternal, this is belief.
