But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, John 1:12 NABRE
In the opening of the Gospel of John we read the story of John the Baptist announcing the coming of the Light of the World. John the Baptist was sent as a witness to Jesus, to tell people that the Light had come into the world. John spoke first to the nation of Israel but they were blind to the coming of the Messiah. Why did they reject Jesus? They did not know Him. They thought they had the true light, though it was not. They had Moses and the Law, the temple and animal sacrifices. They did not understand that these lights pointed to the true Light, the fulfillment of the old covenant. Jesus came to His own people but they did not understand Him and they did not accept Him. The quoted verse changes the story and begins to tell us that the promise of God is for anyone who accepts Christ, accepting Christ anyone will become part of the family of God. Those who accept Christ have the power to become God’s children, adopted and eternal. It becomes a matter of belief in the name of Jesus. It is a new birth that comes from God, a new self, dying of the old self and becoming a new person in God.
Your acceptance of Christ has hopefully changed you. If you are not different from the time before you knew Christ, than perhaps you need to do something different. Perhaps you need to attend church, or find a service a way to help others that you can perform, or maybe you need to connect more with God in prayer. But certainly if you are not new in Christ, there is something you need to do to correct your course. God is here to help, reach out and ask.
Are you a new person in Christ? If you are not and want some help let me know I will walk with you if you like.
