John 1:1 – January 27, 2019

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 NABRE

The Gospel of John has as its major theme that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, with some major types; Jesus is the Lamb of God (sacrifice), the bridge between heaven and earth (Emmanuel), the New Temple (God everywhere), a new birth from above (children of God), the serpent lifted up (healing for all) and the Bread of God which came down from heaven (God feeds us). John opens the gospel with a hymn like poem known as a Prologue with a vision of the Word of God. The Word of God exists through all creation and history. The divine Word was with God from all eternity, was at work in creation and in the history of Israel and then became incarnate in Jesus. The Prologue is a summary of God’s dealings with the world before and in the incarnation of the Word, Jesus. The quoted verse begins with eternity, the following verses move to creation of the world, and the divine activity in the world and then we are given that the Word became human, Jesus, without loss of divinity. Jesus completes the Father’s plan for salvation, through the cross and resurrection and reveals the Father to all while opening a way for humanity to enter eternity with God.

In the opening of the gospel we have a picture of a God alone, then we hear that God was not alone, the Word was with God. This intimates from the beginning the idea of Trinity. From this community of God comes the creation of the world, including us, the image of God in the world. God creates us so we can be with God. We then are like the Son whose core action is to do the will of the one who sent Him. We glorify God by doing the will of God. We need to live in such a way that those who see us, see God.

Are you the image of God? Do you reflect and glorify God by your life?
