For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17 NABRE
John captures Jesus teaching with Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, about eternal life, made available by the cross and into which believers are born by the Spirit’s actions. John now turns to the heart of the Gospel, the famous verse John 3:16 followed by the verse quoted above. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” One time God sent water over the earth to destroy those who were not good. After, God promises never again will he flood the earth. God, knows, given a chance we can all be saved, we can all be good. To help, God sends one who is all good, His Son. He came to save us. We are offered participation in a divine life. We accept this gift through faith in Jesus. Faith is yielding to the action of the Spirit, this action moves a person to agree to what God has revealed and to commit their whole life to God. Faith helps us to believe what could be impossible to believe, God does love us that much.
We are asked to trust the words of Jesus as written in the Gospel of John. That we have a God that will do anything for us to be reunited with Him, in paradise, forever. We are asked to believe. That is the easy part. We are also challenged to demonstrate our belief by acting, committing ourselves to God’s will and work. Putting God first, simple! As we draw near to Christmas day, a celebration of Christ, we should consider doing more for the kingdom of God here and now.
How will you demonstrate your commitment to Christ at Christmas? What can you do to deepen your faith?
