for we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 NABRE
Paul is speaking to the community at Corinth. Chapter five addresses resurrection of the body. He says when we are at home in our body, we are away from the Lord. Our true home is with the Lord. When we no longer live in our body by God’s grace we live in our true home. When our bodies die our souls separate from our physical bodies. We appear before the judgement seat of Christ and if all goes well we receive recompense based on the type of life we live. We end up in front of Christ if we are a follower of Christ by God’s grace. It is possible to receive more once welcomed into our heavenly home, dependent on how we lived. Paul is speaking to the community, speaking about himself and it applies to us. To walk by faith is to live our life, to behave in a conduct Jesus preached; feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, give home to the homeless, clothe the naked, look after the ill and visit the prisoner. Paul is teaching live by trusting God. The opposite is to live by sight, whatever appears. What we see is misleading, we see success comes by money, owning stuff, having earthly power. There is nothing wrong with these things but if this is what we live for then we are missing the teaching of Jesus. We receive recompense at judgement when we live by faith, not by sight.
Paul is pushing us to live a life for others, not for ourselves. This is the teaching of Jesus and Paul is tying it to recompense once we receive the grace of God to enter our true home. We will be judged and how we treat God’s children will be considered when God provides reward. Love God’s children and put them first.
Is your faith strong enough to define your behavior? Can you ignore success that society defines?
