There is no remembrance of past generations; nor will future generations be remembered by those who come after them. Ecclesiastes:1.11 NABRE
Ecclesiastes is a book of scripture with essays, proverbs, parables and allegories. The issues it deals with are those of absolute value in this life, questioning the idea that possessions, fame, success or pleasure should be our primary achievements. A major theme by the author is that all has already been seen under the sun and it is all vanity chasing after the wind. The quoted verse addresses past and future generations, challenging the idea that they are remembered, those who have lived and those who will come after them. It is a fair point; we do have biographies of people in history but in time these are just words and even the words fade away. The people we think we remember, we only remember the idea of who they were, an image that we often create in our own mind. What we remember or learn about them may not represent them at all. Often, we create this utopian image that is unachievable or attainable.
We see utopian images daily through social media, people project an image of themselves which is pretty and touched up, not showing any of the struggle or difficulty of daily life. We see images of people we think we want to become, but are so cosmetic even if we attained them, we would not find happiness or satisfaction. The writings in this book bring an honest appraisal of the human condition and provide healthy correction to a sometimes-excessive self-assurance from other wisdom writings. It is a book that concludes we should rejoice in whatever gifts God may give.
