1 Corinthians 4:3 – September 3, 2022

To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clad and roughly treated, we wander about homeless 1 Corinthians 4:3 NABRE

Paul is sharing in his letter to the community at Corinth how inconsequential are the luxuries and pleasantries of the world. He wants the community to understand all that matters is Christ. Not even Paul himself, or any teacher, or community father as Paul sometimes refers to himself, should have any higher place in the community. All that matters is the body of Christ and the message of unity. Paul describes his own appearance and we can envision him like any homeless person we may meet or see today. This can evoke a sense of need and lowliness that we might come to ignore or overlook in our daily routine.

And I think Paul would understand this behavior. But looking back seeing him in the caricature of homeless person doesn’t come to mind. We think of him as a powerful, influential, leader who has had a tremendous impact on the world. Perhaps it would behoove us to encounter more people who we might initially want to ignore. God uses the foolish and the weak, to make His message known, as Paul wants us to recognize.

What do you think when you stop and see someone of great need? Could you survive without your luxuries?
