Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a violent hailstorm. Revelation 11:19 NABRE
The book of Revelation portrays a victorious time when the reign of God is over the world, though there are still enemies trying to defeat the righteous. The reign of God includes those who belong to Christ and Israel. God’s reign is revealed by the sign of the temple in heaven and the ark of the covenant, these two icons represent God to the people. The ark is the most important symbol of God’s presence to the people in the Hebrew scriptures. Its cover is where the high priest would sprinkle blood for the atonement of the sins of Israel once each year. In Israel’s early history the ark was carried into battle to signify the Lord is fighting on behalf of the people. One of the most prominent examples is the conquest of Jericho, where the ark is used to bring down the walls. Whenever the ark was brought out to go before Israel during the wilderness journey, Moses would say, “Arise, O LORD, may your enemies be scattered, and may those who hate you flee before you.” (Numbers 10:35) The revealing of this ark in heaven is declaring God is present and fighting for all beings.
This passage is seen as a celebration of the reign of the kingdom of God. It also reminds the reader of the connection between the Hebrew people which has been expanded to include gentile Christians. Christians who have come to God through Christ are now chosen people and will also see the revelation of the presence of God in the reign of God. God is God of all people.
Do you realize God is available to all beings? Do you know you are the chosen of God?
