See, days are coming—oracle of the LORD—when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. Jeremiah 31:31 NABRE
Jeremiah writes about a new covenant with the Lord. There have been several covenants between God and the people, the Noahic Covenant, the Abrahamic Covenant, the Mosaic Covenant, the Davidic Covenant and in each of these there has been a breaking of the covenant, but no matter the circumstance God has always kept His side. A covenant in biblical times might be similar to what we call a contract, treaty, or a will. Each covenant establishes the basis of a relationship, conditions for that relationship, promises and conditions of the relationship and consequences if those conditions are unmet. One of the most familiar examples of a covenant for us is marriage. For the most part God’s covenants have been with the people, God chooses emissaries to share the terms of the covenant but the promise is for all God’s chosen people. Jeremiah shares a new covenant God is establishing which promises a coming day when God will make a new covenant unlike all others. It promises forgiveness of sin, internal renewal of the heart, and intimate knowledge of God. On the night before His death Jesus declares He is establishing this new covenant. It is a covenant written on the hearts of all people, not just a chosen nation.

We are the subjects of this covenant. God wants us to know Him intimately and know no matter what we will always be deeply loved and always forgiven. God uses love to establish His covenant and will love us into the promise of perpetual life.

Do you like being in a covenant with God? Are you aware of God’s commitment to always be in your heart?
