Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done?—oracle of the LORD. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. Jeremiah 18:6 NABRE
Jeremiah is sent by God to a potter’s workshop and though nothing extraordinary happens the prophet uses the potter’s work as an image to illustrate aspects of God’s preaching. God is like a potter who has clay in his hands and hopes it will lend itself to be molded to the shape he wants. We have this image of God as a potter forming humanity, like Adam out of the dust from the ground. The image shows God as this omnipotent creator and humanity as formless bits of clay that God hopes will be open to be formed. In this passage God is hoping Judah will allow itself to be formed into a loving, faithful community, allowing God to make them anew, protecting them from other nations and providing all they need for life. But like the clay, allowing itself to be shaped into something beautiful and useful, God expects His people to let themselves be remade.
We too are clay in God’s hands. We can be shaped and made into something new and beautiful, but we have to allow ourselves to be remade and formed by the creator of the universe. Being remade can mean being open to God’s word, allowing the message of God touch our hearts and shape us to be people who will do all God desires. Knowing God as a potter who can form the most beautiful pottery from who we are, we can be remade into beauty and something most useful to the world. Allow the potter to make and shape you, bending to the movement of His hands.
Have you seen a potter molding clay? Do you allow God to shape you every day?
Knowing God as a potter who can form the most beautiful pottery from who we are, we can be remade into beauty and something most useful to the world. Allow the potter to make and shape you, bending to the movement of His hands.
