But the LORD answered me, Do not say, “I am too young.” To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Jeremiah 1:7 NABRE
We read the account of the call of Jeremiah which gives a good idea of the mysterious nature of every divine call, a call from all eternity and involving no merit on the part of the person called, in which God makes known to the soul the why and wherefore of their life. No one comes into being by accident, for everything that happens is part of God’s divine providence. God’s action in creating a person is described graphically, we read, before I “formed” you in the womb I knew you. These are like words used to describe what a potter does when they model something in clay. The Lord “knew” Jeremiah, meaning He has already chosen him for a special mission. God has a plan for each person and He endows each with talents that equip them to put God’s plan into place. Jeremiah tries to protest saying he does not know how to speak, but God responds by saying his protest are no good because God gives him the words to speak and has set the direction he will go.
God’s plan for a person is made before the person is born and it emerges in due course. When the person is old enough, they will take on the assignment God has given them, which God has been training them to perform their entire life. When the mystery of our calling begins to be revealed we may react out of fear and believe we are not worthy, but God doesn’t need us to be worthy, simply willing to be led. Jeremiah is a great prophet and we have many of his oracles, but in the beginning, he does not believe he is worthy. God needs all of us to enact His plan. Say yes to God and be great like Jeremiah.
Do you know God’s planned for you? Are you aware God knows you better than you know yourself?
