You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NABRE
Micah is recounting a sort of trial between the Lord and the Hebrew people with the mountains and hills as the witnesses. The scene is one where those being addressed are as if defendants and those who are expected to give judgment. The people are again being condemned for their unjust and immoral behavior. The case of guilt is made quite strongly and anyone listening would agree that the people must depend on the just deeds of the Lord for reconciliation. The prophet announces what can be done is to trust in God’s mercy and with confidence know the Lord will hear their plea. There is no sacrifice that will be pleasing to God, even offering the firstborn will not placate God. It is not a matter of formal religious worship but involves obedience towards God which in turn means practicing justice and charity towards our neighbor. Often, we see God’s plan for renewal involves justice and goodness in how we interact with others and to walk humbly with God; in other words, to be ready to do God’s will, not our own.
Often, we think doing our own will, working toward our own agenda is the best approach in life. But God tells us over and over again it is how we treat others, and live with our neighbor that leads to the most enduring and fruitful life. Listening to God, doing God’s will and living a life of justice and good leads to a joy filled life and one where we hold our head high knowing we have walked humbly with God.
What is your approach to justice and goodness? Who is your neighbor?
