Their heart is false! Now they will pay for their guilt: God will break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars. Hosea 10:2 NABRE
Hosea speaking about Israel indicates as she becomes wealthier, she becomes more corrupt. He opens this chapter by calling Israel a luxuriant vine with abundant fruit, building more altars and sacred pillars but with a false heart. God will break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars. Israel is building monuments to God but their hearts do not serve God, they are false in their adoration looking more to resources and riches for their life’s joy and not seeing God as the source of their life. The entire passage is a reminder that material progress can have consequences, we advance in technology and efficiency but these bring strong temptations. The advancement is a great aid to humanity but it places so much in front of us that we often don’t see God. Many people work hard and seek to enjoy their rest time with pleasure. These pleasures become so important that we don’t put priority in the source of all life. Spiritual communities create retreats pointing out how necessary it is to break away from life and rest in the arms of the Almighty one. We are not made to work hard and expand our resources for some day down the road, or for moments of respite and joy. All life is to be joy! We need to prioritize our seeking of the one who brings life and not making God a visit once a week or for a long weekend.
Our hearts are false too when we only meet God on Sunday or a few minutes a day. Having God in our heart always is the means to a most joyful, peaceful life. Our heart must hold God fully, and when we do God is always with us. Live with a true heart.
