Amos answered Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor do I belong to a company of prophets. I am a herdsman and a dresser of sycamores,” Amos 7:14 NABRE
Amos has an altercation with Amaziah, the priest of the sanctuary of Bethel and a supporter of the king. Amaziah sees Amos a prophet who is only going to cause trouble in the kingdom, and he has no interest in trying to understand Amos’ message which exposes injustice and deceit to which Amaziah is a party. Amos does not regard himself a prophet in the normal sense, as one who earns his bread by giving oracles in exchange for payment. To disassociate himself from this kind of professional prophet Amos rejects the title prophet, he is by profession a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees. But the Lord has sent him to “prophesy” to Israel. Amos is an ordinary man who is commissioned by the Lord, out of the blue, to proclaim a message.
A call from God is something of an imperative that no one should refuse, but at the same time it gives meaning and strength to the person’s life; it confers on the person a sense of authority even over institutions like the king, temple or church. God’s calling gives us a mission, it invites us to share in the unique task of the work of God, to bear witness to God before all people and to draw all things to God. It provides meaning for our existence and we should be grateful and energized to complete this mission. Our life acquires a new dimension, a depth we did not perceive prior and with God as our partner it sets up to be very successful. We understand where God is leading us, and we feel meaningful purpose in His tasks.
Do you know your mission for God? Do you allow God to lead your life?
