When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. John 16:21 NABRE
Jesus provides information about the grief the disciples will experience when He is gone from them. They will see Jesus crucified and put to death; their grief will be just one emotion they will experience. They will be surprised their fortunes which hung on Jesus will be completely changed. They are also not ready to understand anything Jesus has told them about raising in three days. They go into hiding and when they hear the tomb is empty, they react like His body has bene stolen. Jesus tells them they will grieve and then they will rejoice. Jesus uses the example of child birth, a woman in labor will be in anguish because her hour has arrived but when she gives birth, she will no longer remember the pain but will rejoice that she is the mother of a child. It is interesting in the example Jesus uses the term “her hour has come,” something we read in John about Jesus, He will say my hour has not come and then eventually my hour has arrived. This hour is the moment of His crucifixion. The mother gives birth, just as Christ’s resurrection provides new life for all who have died and those who will die in the future. In many ways Jesus is the mother in His own example.
The cycle of life, is birth, growth and death. We see it through the seasons, through all forms of life, and we hear that in order to have new life something must die. A flower dies and drops it seeds into the earth and new flowers are born. Jesus’ death is an example of the life cycle, death and new life, birthing a new child like a mother.
Do you ever think of Jesus as mother? What is your view of the cycle of life?
