Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” Matthew 28:10 NABRE
Matthew tells the story of the disciples returning from Jesus’ tomb after finding it empty. Two of the ladies had brought spices to anoint Jesus’ body and they turn back after seeing the open tomb wondering where they have taken His body. They are met on the return trip by Christ Himself and they bow, embrace His feet and give Him homage. Christ is more interested in them bringing a message to the others, that He will meet them in Galilee, the place He spent much of His life, near His home. He will meet them there and it will begin a new phase in their ministry. This meeting occurs after Christ is resurrected from the tomb and word is beginning to be told He is risen. These two women are the first Christ sends to bring the message of His resurrection. They are the first Apostles sent when the news of Christ rising is being told, just as he told them.
Jesus crucified is an image of what humanity does to itself. We tend to be more criticized and belittled by others in humanity. For some reason we get more enjoyment out of seeing others falter or fail then seeing them succeed. Confessors will tell they often He our weeping and suffering, it is our woundedness we carry constantly. God is aware of how we suffer at the hands of one another. Jesus on the cross becomes the image of this bad treatment. God’s response to suffering is resurrection and glory. The death we suffer will fade away in the joy of our resurrection. Jesus is the first to live this experience and we are all called to follow in His path. Apostles are sent to bring this good news, meet Christ and discover joy.
Do you suffer and feel wounded by others? How do you imagine the cross and resurrection?
