Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid, with what will you restore its flavor? Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another. Mark 9:50 NABRE
Jesus has many sayings. He teaches often in parables so that what He teaches is timeless. This saying on salt is well understood by those Jesus is speaking to, salt was important for preserving meat and adding flavor. Even today where we have many spices in cooking, salt is used almost in every meal to enhance flavor. If something has no flavor sometimes adding salt will make it tasty again. But if salt loses its flavor there is nothing that will restore it. Therefore if salt seasons everything and it becomes tasteless, what is left to season it? Jesus is cautioning His disciples from falling into a bland, insipid spirituality that has no power to attract others. They have been called the salt of the earth, (see Matthew 5:13) if even they become mediocre Christians in their life, what is left for the world?
We may see Christians excited (or sometimes called on fire) for the message of Jesus. This can happen when newly discovering Jesus and His message of love, but in time the fire may subside or perhaps even burn out. Jesus needs us to turn that flame into hot coals, which remain burning within us perpetually. If disciples lose the light of Jesus message it will slowly go out around the world, even to a point where people may never know Jesus existed. In order to remain salty we must always embrace Jesus call to humility and self-denial, we must seek the kingdom of God here and now and live in the same consciousness that Jesus lived.
Are you losing yoru energy to express Jesus’ love? Are you able to refresh your spirituality and desire to attract others?
In order to remain salty and thus attract others we must always embrace Jesus call to humility and self-denial, we must seek the kingdom of God here and now and live in the same consciousness that Jesus lived.
